Periodontology is concerned with the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth (gums).
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums; usually manifests as reddening, swelling and bleeding from the gums, especially recognizable when cleaning the teeth and is mostly caused by poor oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene practices like brushing twice a day, rinsing mouth after every meal and visiting dentist once in 6 months significantly reduces the chances of gums getting infected.
In severe cases the inflammation of the periodontium can be a chronic disease. A preference of periodontal disease in the family history can be indicator for that. In these cases a long-term treatment plan should be established with a periodontal specialist (periodontologist).
Periodontitis is inflammation of the tissue around the teeth, often causing shrinkage of the gums and loosening of the teeth as a result of bone loss. Almost 30-40% adults suffers from periodontitis and is the most frequent reason for tooth loss in adults. Periodontitis usually manifest as increased tooth mobility, gum bleeding or bad breath and often goes unnoticed as it causes only minor pain. Periodontitis is mostly associated with dental plaque and bad oral hygiene.
The treatment plan usually depends on the extent of the disease; in mild cases non-surgical therapy like professional in-depth teeth cleaning in several sessions is carried out. In case of an advanced state of Periodontitis or if the non-surgical therapy fails, a periodontal surgery becomes necessary. Especially in more severe cases a periodontal surgery has to intervene to avoid further bone loss and to stabilize the periodontal tissues.
Prevention is better than cure. A professional tooth cleaning helps to preserve dental health and reduces the risk of caries and periodontitis.
A recurrent professional tooth cleaning is the most effective care for preserving healthy and beautiful teeth for a lifetime. The dentist professionally cleans the interdental spaces, niches and molars which are difficult to reach with the personal toothbrush. Extrinsic stains caused by smoking, pan chewing and calculus can eliminated.
The advantages of professional dental hygiene are:
Tooth root can be exposed due to recession of gums, which causes tooth sensitivity and can result in loss of bone holding the tooth. To treat this condition, the exposed root has to be covered with soft tissue, which requires coverage of the exposed dental roots is indicated. Therefore, a gingival transplant is harvested from a donor side either in the area of the upper wisdom teeth or the palate and applied where needed. The result is an improvement of dental health and often-dental aesthetics. The dental roots are now protected by stabile gum conditions and the risk of progressing facial bone loss and root decay is reduced.
